Vince Young and Chef Phillip Brown Demonstrate STEAM Cooking to EAPrep Students

Former NFL player Vince Young met with twenty-five East Austin College Prep 5th and 6th graders Sunday at Vince Young Steakhouse to explain that STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) can be used in everyday activities like cooking
Vince Young talks about his childhood and the importance of education.
“I am so proud of you guys for being here today to learn about science and math,” Young told the kids, adding that he was the first in his family to go to college.
The event was orchestrated by Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds initiative with the help of Young and Chef Phillip Brown of Vince Young Steakhouse. While Chef Brown spent the morning teaching the kids that measuring ingredients is crucial to cooking, Young arrived later to talk about his use of math on the football field while playing for the Texas Longhorns and later in the NFL.
The students had an opportunity to create their own salads.
The kids had the opportunity to create their own salad dressing and, after a Q & A with Young, the football star autographed their chef hats, provided by Time Warner Cable.
TWC Director of Community Investment Elise Longpree explained why her company is so invested in the Connect A Million Minds initiative. “Through fun and cool events like today,” says Longpree, “students learn that STEAM is in everything we do. Even cooking."
All EAPrep students received a TWC apron and chef hat.
“Every positive experience students have brings them closer to embracing STEAM at school, home, and their future careers,” adds Corin Caridine, Project Director of EAPrep’s ACE after school program.
