This summer, East Austin College Prep student Michael Alvarez spent several weeks as a software development intern at Sound Spectrum, a music visualization software company based in Austin, Texas. Alvarez, an incoming junior at EAPrep this fall, excels in the school’s Globaloria game design program where he has won many awards at the local and national level.

Using a language called Python, Michael has gained real development experience at Sound Spectrum. “Compared to Globaloria, this has been challenging but I am able to learn about different coding languages in-depth and use it in the real world,” says Alvarez. “I was able to use my previous knowledge from Globaloria and apply that to my internship.”

Alvarez had the opportunity to create his own sound design using Python.

Sound Spectrum founder Andy O’Meara remembers how important mentors were to him and wanted to reach out to a determined youth to offer the same opportunities he received as a student. O’Meara was impressed with Alvarez’s work at EAPrep and said Alvarez’s teachers spoke highly of him. “I think it’s crucial for young students to learn how to code at an early age especially with the digital age evolving so quickly,” says O’Meara. “It’s beneficial for the students because they can succeed in a professional career.”

Alvarez enjoyed the internship because he was able to get a glimpse into the life of a professional developer. “I felt like this experience was a test to see if this is something that I really want to do,” says Alvarez. “My internship this summer confirmed my desire to pursue computer science as a career.”
